Hance Jones and Caroline Lewis-Jones

Hance Jones and Caroline Lewis-Jones make their relationship a priority, even though as a professional dancer, choreographer, and dance teacher, Caroline’s work keeps her on the road dancing, choreographing, and teaching master classes (when she’s not working with her new dance company, Unbound). But spending so much time apart has made them treasure time together that much more.

Caroline: “He has an amazing personality. He’s extremely smart. He can fix anything. He’s sort of like a Renaissance man, in a way. We just fit together. We’re the perfect little mold.”

Hance: “She’s a great person. She’s got a great heart. She’s got this magnetism that people tend to gravitate towards. She always wants the best for everybody.”

Jim & Jennifer Windham

I Love You

Jim and Jennifer Windham met in a chance encounter online. They hit it off right from the start, until they realized they lived thousands of miles away from each other. “When he posted his profile, it said ‘Florence,’” remembers Jennifer. “There was a Florence, Oregon, about 40 miles down the road.” It turned out Jim was living in Florence, South Carolina. Deciding to keep in touch despite the difference, they decided to meet in person after a year of online chatting. They have been happily married for six years now.

Jim: “She doesn’t lie; she’ll never mislead you. She’s honest.”

Jennifer: “He’s tender and he’s caring and he’s patient, which is important, I think. And he’s kind. Jim is a big kid at heart, and I think that’s probably what makes it work.”

Kristin & Jeremy Calloway

I Love You

Kristin and Jeremy Calloway met four years ago; they worked in the same circle and became good friends, but their relationship wasn’t romantic. Then, Jeremy moved away to go to law school, and they missed each other. It was a life-changing experience for both of them: Kristin became a mom, and her relationship with her son’s father ultimately ended, and Jeremy decided that law school wasn’t for him after all. When he got back to Augusta, it wasn’t long before he and Kristin had re-connected—and for them to realize they’d been the perfect match, all along.

Kristin: “We have the exact same sense of humor. He’s very sweet and sensitive, but he’s also a guy’s guy. He always puts family first.”

Jeremy: “She’s beautiful; she’s sweet. Everyone that is around her is really that much better for it. I don’t know a single person that doesn’t like her.”

"I don't regret..." Abby Peoples, Survivor

“I don’t regret my mastectomy,” Abby says. She lost her grandmother, father, and beloved sister Alicia Sanderlin to cancer, and tested positive for the breast cancer gene, giving her an 84% chance of developing breast cancer herself. But Abby took action, giving up her healthy breasts at 29 years old with a double mastectomy, hoping to beat the disease before it appeared.

“The cancer gene that my family has is just so aggressive,” she says. “I couldn’t sit back and wait on it to get me.” Now Abby is confident she’ll be around to watch her two-year-old daughter grow up.

“I saved my life,” she says. “I won’t say that I have not endured a lot of pain, because I have. I will not say I have not shed a lot of tears, because I have. But I will say I will soon be as good as new without the worry of having breast cancer and would do it all over again if I had to.”

"I don't regret..." Ellen Thames, Mom

“I don’t regret the decision to adopt my son from Guatemala,” says Ellen. “The minute I saw his photograph, he was my son.”

For her, she says, the most difficult choices for her and her husband came at the beginning of the process: deciding between a domestic or international adoption, and then choosing the country through which to adopt their child. “We just felt drawn to Guatemala,” she says.

Although adoption isn’t for everyone—there are applications, months of waiting, and lots of uncertainty—Ellen wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again. “I think the most difficult part was that we knew we wanted to be parents and we were committed to that, and we just needed to figure out how it was going to happen,” she says.

Her son, Mac, is all the proof Ellen needs to be certain that her choice was the right one. “He is three, and he is such a joy,” she says. “We have never looked back.”

"I don't regret..." Jordan & Christine Michelle, Kidney Twins

“I don’t regret donating a kidney,” says Jordan Hadden. Although she’s related to Christine Michelle Roy only by marriage, Jordan’s kidney was a perfect match—an even better match than Christine Michelle’s own family.

“I just knew that I was supposed to get tested,” says Jordan. “Everyone thought I was a little loopy…since we weren’t blood relatives. I just listened to my heart and did what I was supposed to do.”

The experience bound the two women forever; they call each other “sister,” and will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the surgery this month.

“If it weren’t for [Jordan], I don’t think I would be here today. She’ll be part of our lives forever,” says Christine Michelle.

“She is one of the most incredible people I’ve met in my whole entire life,” says Jordan. “She lives every day to the fullest and she’s taught me to do the same. I just feel like I have a new set of eyes now.”

Jane Bess / Potter

From Play-Doh and clay to crayons and magic markers, Jane always had a heart for art. But it wasn’t until she took an evening pottery class eight years ago that Jane discovered her natural art form. “I knew that this is what I was supposed to be doing,” she says. Drawing upon her education as an interior designer, Jane throws a unique sense of style, color theory, and earthy-ness into her functional art. Largely present in Jane’s pottery are the colors and seaside theme of Charleston’s lowcountry, where she is from, and the peachy countryside of Edgefield where she lives. In order to create a work of art, Jane must be centered and balanced. “A cup of hot tea and getting out in nature,” she says, are great ways to warm up her creativity before getting behind the (potter’s) wheel.

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Last month, Jane Bess Pottery celebrated it's third anniversary.

2. Clients from as far as Sweden are purchasing Jane's pottery.

3. Jane's studio is open to the shop. Customers, especially children, love watching her create works of art.

Juliana King / Textile Designer

Those ten years of inhaling home décor magazines must have paid off for Juliana. Last January, she started designing heirloom-quality pillows using antique textile treasures from France. And Juliana’s little art project is causing an all-out pillow fight amongst women wanting to cozy-up with a little piece of history. Juliana’s travels abroad instilled in her an appreciation for antique textile art, “a completely under-appreciated genre of art in this country.” The busy mom of two doesn’t have much time to get inspired. “A glass of green tea and a little dark chocolate get my creative juices flowing,” she says.  The pillows talk to Juliana when she stares at her collection of Aubusson tapestry fragments, metallic embroideries and appliqués, and trim from dilapidated church garments spread across her dining room table. The Columbia native is making a comfortable living selling her work locally at Verve Interiors and on her website AntiqueTextilePillows.com.

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Juliana began with the ultimate vision of traveling through Europe with her girls, shopping Parisian flea markets, and bringing back textile treasures."

2. Juliana's girls are ages two and a half and five.

3. Juliana is a graduate of Hammond School and Washington and Lee University.

Sharron Martin / Author

Though it may seem stranger than fiction, this ex-school teacher and church choir singer has murder on her mind. The puzzle of Sharron’s murder mystery novels are put together in the study of her Augusta home, surrounded by books. And once she’s in her happy place, Sharron “plays a couple of games of solitaire on the computer and then gets right to it.” To start a novel, Sharron doesn’t have to know who committed the crime, just how they get caught. As the plot of her work twists and turns and quirky characters come to life, Sharron becomes so involved in mystery that sometimes her brain lingers behind. “It’s hard for me to go from fiction back to the real world,” Sharron says. One of Sharron’s books, Murder Sings Out, has been published. And she’s looking for an agent to publish more of her “whodunits.”

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Sharron is not a morning person. Her choir director jokes that she doesn't get up "before the crack of noon."

2. Though Sharron loves writing, she doesn't particularly enjoy the business end of publishing.

3. Sharron started writing in the days of handwritten manuscripts. But now she prefers creating and editing on a computer because it's so easy to fix mistakes.

Kay Mixon : Safe Haven

Sound Off

“You’d be surprised by what goes on behind closed doors,” Kay says. Years ago, Kay was shocked to learn one of her friends wasn’t black and blue from “being clumsy,” but was, in fact, a battered woman. Kay, who had volunteered for The Coalition to Assist Abused Persons while studying for a psychology degree, helped her friend escape domestic abuse and, in the process, found her calling. For the last 23 years, Kay has worked for the Cumbee Center and assisted victims with Orders of Protection, shelter, short and long term counseling, and other necessities for starting over.

“Everyone deserves to have a peaceful life. The Cumbee Center provides temporary refuge for domestic and sexual assault victims and their children. I believe no one should have to live in fear. We listen to victims and help them discover feelings, identify options, discuss and discover strengths, and choose options.”

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Kay was a non-traditional student. "I went back to college when my youngest child was in second grade," she says.

2. The first law for domestic violence wasn't instituted until 1984. "Until then," Kay says, "it was legal to beat your wife every Saturday night as long as the stick was no bigger than your little finger."

Mary Beth Pierucci : Reproductive Rights Advocate

Sound Off

Growing up “very Catholic,” Mary Beth had no real “sex ed.” But because she didn’t want nine children like her grandmother, when she became sexually active as an adult, Mary Beth sought out Planned Parenthood’s educational and affordable services. “Planned Parenthood is about responsibility,” she says. “People come here because they want to make responsible decisions about their sexual health.” As Planned Parenthood of Georgia’s Director of Public Policy, she monitors state legislation, educates lawmakers on the broad implications of proposed bills, and battles against more restrictions on abortion. Mary Beth is a strong believer in prevention and family planning.

“Planned Parenthood is a trusted community health care provider and informed educator. We promote a commonsense approach to women’s health, based on respect for each individual’s right to make informed, independent decisions about health, sex, and family planning. Planned Parenthood is a leader in the reproductive health and rights movement.”

Barbara Rackes : Political Aide

Sound Off

Until Barbara worked on a campaign and witnessed “the intrusive nature of media into the personal lives of candidates,” her “life plan” was to run for office. In fact, political aspirations were the reason she went to law school. Confused, Barbara left Capital Hill, moved back to SC and opened clothing stores. Then, in 1996, Barbara took her business online. Now, no longer in retail, Barbara “makes the internet make sense” for businesses with her company, The Rackes Group. And, through her work with the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics, she seeks and encourages women to run for office.

“If we’re ever going to change dirty politics, we need more women in public office. It’s proven now that women in Congress are more effective than their male counterparts. Women reach across party lines and govern by persuasion, not authority. It’s a much more pleasant, more collaborative way of working.”

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Rackes, Barbara's clothing stores, expanded from Columbia to Charlotte and Greenville and grew to a ten million dollar company.

Missie Bowman Boisvert ׀ Vino Connoisseur

The Secret To...

Missie, the owner of Palmetto Package & Fine Wine Shop, is not a big drinker. But in the ways of wine, she is well-read and experienced. Believing every person is the authority on what type of wine they like, Missie is not a wine snob. “Your palate is your palate is your palate,” she argues. Missie is stomping arrogance out of wine and making appreciators out of many with an adult education course at USC Aiken and tastings at her store.

“The secret to appreciating wine is using all five senses. Feel the shape of the bottle, smell the bouquet, look at the color and clarity, taste it several times, and hear it as you clink glasses with a friend.”

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Missie says that being from Aiken has served her well. And when she returned to her hometown, she was determined to "serve" her community.

Vera Gillie ׀ Survivor

The Secret To...

Having survived breast cancer four times, Vera is an inspiration to women undergoing treatment at Palmetto Health Breast Center in Columbia. Though Vera’s cancer was “a silent little thing” and the disease nor the rounds of chemotherapy and radiation made her physically ill, she understands the emotional pain of hair loss, the fear of death, and the importance of faith and a positive attitude. On October 3, Vera will be honored for the strength and support she’s offered other women as this year’s featured survivor for the Walk for Life.

“The secret to surviving breast cancer is having the right positive attitude, drinking your water, and trusting your faith.”

1. Just before Vera's first diagnosis of cancer, she started a caretaking business called By Faith. With referrals from clients and word of mouth, her business is flourishing.

Codee Buckler ׀ Lacrosse Player

“Most people here don’t even know what lacrosse is,” Codee says. But the Maryland native and defensive wing on South Carolina’s Women’s Lacrosse Team is enjoying playing her favorite sport at a “big school in the south.” Most players on Codee’s team at USC in Columbia turned down offers to play at Division 1 schools, so it’s not your average club team. The squad has been to the Southeastern Women’s Lacrosse League playoffs both Codee’s freshman and sophomore years. On the field, Codee says the team works well together. And off the field, they’re very social. Between lacrosse practice, studying for a civil engineering degree, and her job at Wild Wing, Codee has limited time for a social life. “Lacrosse is great; it’s like our own little sorority,” she says. “We even have mixers with the guys’ team.”

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Codee's "stay at home dad" taught her how to play lacrosse when she was in 2nd grade.

2. Since Codee loves math (she's even minoring in the subject), she's the team's Treasurer.

3. Last season, Codee got "carded" for illegal body contact. "If you've never gotten a yellow card," she says, "you've never played!"

Samantha Pruitte ׀ Archer

Samantha has great aim. And since her arrows travel 257 feet per second, that’s a very good thing. Introduced to archery at age five and competing by six, Samantha’s early start in the sport put her right on target for Georgia’s Archery Team. Individually and with the state, she’s competed in Turkey, Poland, Venezuela and throughout the U.S. “Archery has taken me places I’d probably never go,” she says.  Samantha is the number one Junior Female Compound Archer in the US and hits mostly 10s and 9s (the middle of the target). She has lots of precious medals—several bronze, a few silver, and gold for the World Archery Championship and the Junior World Championship. A recent graduate of Harlem High School, Samantha is enrolled at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville and plans to revive their dormant archery club.

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Samantha practices four days a week. "It's a hassle sometimes," she says, "especially in 95 degree weather."

2. Since 7th grade, Samantha (with the help of her parents') has taught younger kids to shoot at Columbia County's 4H Club.

3. Samantha is also a shooting star in the classroom. She was ranked #23 in he graduating class of 240 and has a 3.62 GPA.

Lori Thatcher ׀ Tennis Star

Lori, a mother and businesswoman, does a lot of multitasking during the day. But on the court, she has only “one thing to focus on—a round, yellow ball.” Lori volleys parenting, a computer programming business, coaching junior tennis, assisting the head pro at the O’Dell Weeks Center, and, of course, her own love of the game and participation on various teams.  Under Lori’s direction, the Weeks Center’s 14 & Under Team has won the State Championship four years in a row. “Kids pick up the game so well,” she says. “I love watching their improvement from day to day.” Originally from South Georgia, Lori says tennis helped her score great friends in Aiken and Augusta. And since going out to lunch after a match is just part of the social aspect of the sport, Lori is thankful that tennis is great exercise. “I hate the gym,” she says. “I enjoy this and it helps me maintain my weight and health.”

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Lori has a 15-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy. Her son plays on Lori's State Championship-winning 14 & Under Team.

Linda S. Amstutz—Humorist

I'm A Feminist Because...

“…I laughed with ‘Maude.’ I worshipped Gloria Steinem. I read Naomi Wolf. I believed Anita Hill. I sympathized with Lorena Bobbitt. I voted for Hillary Clinton. And the only footsteps I choose to follow were made with high heels.”

Linda, a Midwesterner, lives in Columbia and thinks she’s southern. She writes jokes for stand-up comics and essays for publications (including skirt!). Her second marriage has “passed the 18-year expiration date” and is still good. Linda recently wrote Seeing Red, a romance comedy, and she “cannibalizes her life” at anotherlinda.blogspot.com.

1. Linda's book Dozens Of Uses For A Dead Dick (based on the Lorena Bobbitt case) was available at Spencer, breaking their "no penis policy." 2. Linda went to college at "The School of Hard Knocks." She was married at 18 and has been reading and studying ever since. 3. When Linda married her second husband and they combined their households, they had four teenagers living under one roof. Will Smith—The Fresh Prince

I'm A Feminist Because...

“…females are human. They are born and raised to appear like flowers just to be confronted by burly, barking trees. Women are underestimated, brooded, mistreated but sturdy, life giving and thoughtful. Thank you strong women for standing up for yourselves because men like me, at times, have been wrong.”

Will is a student at USC Columbia, a used car processor, and the keyboardist in the Papa String Band. He likes to play tennis, plant something new every spring, and write about current events and his hopes and dreams till the wee hours of the morning.

 1. Will's mom raised six boys-her four sons, her husband, and her dad. 2. Dr. Akers, Will's 16th and 17th Century Lit Professor, opened his "eyes to how women have a foot on them." 3. Will now realizes he had taken on "Southern Baptist thinking." And it wasn't helping him out in relationships at all.

Madalyn Velie—Commanding Officer

I'm A Feminist Because...

“…I broke the broom that was shoved in my locker and refused to be undermined or humiliated. Upon rising to a leadership position, I have been told too many times to make sandwiches, clean up trash, or be quiet and get back in the kitchen.”

Madalyn is a South Aiken High School student and the highest ranked NJROTC officer. While studying the feminist movement in history class, she experienced those same old struggles in the wardroom (anti-feminist jokes and all!). Now officially in charge of the guys who disrespected her, Madalyn has the last laugh.

1. Madalyn is just 16 years old. 2. Madalyn's father was in the Marine Corp. She loves the "community aspect" of being part of something like NJROTC, especially at a big high school. 3. Madalyn has a 4.01 GPA. She loves psychology and her hip hop dance class.

Paulette McElwain, Visionary

Paulette is my Shero because she creates a supportive, even loving, atmosphere for patients at the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood, many of whom lack health insurance. After sending a nurse to "hold my hand" during my IUD placement, she distracted my boyfriend (who’d paled two shades in the waiting room) with a guided tour.
~Nominated by Joia Wood, Charlottesville , Va.

Spurred by the growing need for women’s health services, Paulette launched a $4.6 million campaign for VLPP’s new facility, opened last month at 201 N. Hamilton. “Access to affordable family planning often means, quite literally, the difference between a woman finishing college or not,” Paulette, VLPP’s President and CEO, notes.  On weekends she hits the Goochland countryside with her horse, Splash.

Dr. Pauline M. Hughes- Spinister and Minister

This is a woman that makes you ask “how does she do it?” Dr. Hughes is a chaplain at Doctors Hospital and United Hospice. She’s also an instructor at the South Augusta Family Y, where she teaches aerobics and spinning. This former competitive 5K runner is so full of energy.

~Nominated by Anne Cordeiro, Augusta, GA

Dr. Hughes is a native Augustan, a juicer, an avid reader, and a mom to her 22-year-old daughter and three-year-old poodle. When she’s not ministering to the sick or offering spiritual support to bereaving families, she likes to “rough it” on camping trips (in their RV, with a shower).

1. Pauline wanted to be a nurse, but failed the nursing exam four times. "I thought that was what I wanted to be," she says. "But I just wanted the uniform."

2. Dr. Hughes doesn't really fit the typical "mold" for a chaplain. "God called ME into this field," she says. "Short skirts, red suits, and all!"

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Archana admits that she's not the best driver. "The dents and dings make me stronger," she says.

2. Archana teaches math, but also lends an ear to her students. Archana just hears them out and tells her students to listen to their own voice. "The answer is always within them," she says.

3. Archana lives by the Indian word "abhaya." "It means fearlessness," she says. "Nothing is permanent...enjoy what you have...look for the good stuff and don't be afraid to LIVE!"

Amy Curran- Air Quality Controller

Amy, an Environmental Educator in the Air Quality Division of the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, is saving the world one air molecule at a time. She’s fantastic at coordinating events and campaigns to help us mere mortals improve the quality of air in South Carolina.

~Nominated by Liz McDonald, Lexington, SC

Amy lives in Lexington with her partner of 12 years and their cats and dogs. She’s mowing down pollution with lawn mower exchanges, anti-idling campaigns, and car care awareness events. Amy loves taking care of the planet, but in her next life, wants to be a backup dancer for Beyonce.

ONLINE EXTRAS:

1. Amy knew she "had to save South Carolina from air pollution" when she was teaching PE and saw the woods behind the school's field being clear-cut and burned.

2. Amy's lawn mower exchanges offer South Carolinians the chance to make a difference by trading in their gas mower for a discount on an electric one.

3. Amy wakes up in the morning with enthusiasm and a good attitude because she loves seeing "others take baby steps to help the environment."

Shayna and Debbie Katzman

When Debbie moved from London to Columbia and started Unlimited Marketing Solutions, she hoped to soon afford her daughter. Shayna, an artist, illustrator and public relations whiz kid, joined her “mum” a year and a half ago and is helping decorate their office on Devine with gold and silver ADDYS!

Debbie: “The boundaries of boss, mother, and daughter are so clear. I couldn’t get a better and more loyal person with the skills Shayna has.”

Shayna: “We spend too much time together, but that makes us relaxed and in-synch. We know what the other needs in some weird organic way.”
